Indian domestic cricket has come into a bad picture once again, all thanks to the top brass of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The state body was involved in some of the shocking forgery controversies in Indian cricket history.

On Wednesday, July 9, three top officials of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) and two others were arrested on forgery, cheating, and fund misappropriation charges. Among those arrested are HCA president A. Jagan Mohan Rao, treasurer C.J. Srinivas Rao, and CEO Suneel Kante.

Additionally, the two top officials from a private cricket club in Hyderabad were also taken into custody. Another senior Hyderabad Cricket Association official is under investigation and could be arrested soon. They were arrested by the Telangana police after Dharam Gurava Reddy, general secretary of the Telangana Cricket Association (TCA), lodged a formal complaint on June 9, 2025.

Following the FIR by Reddy, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) launched a criminal case under several serious sections of the Indian Penal Code, including forgery, criminal breach of trust, and cheating. The charges include using fake documents, stealing funds, and misusing power for personal gain.

The sources said the findings from a vigilance and enforcement report, which revealed shocking details including how Hyderabad Cricket Association officials allegedly harassed the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team management for free tickets during the IPL 2025, have been taken into account by the CID.

HCA President used forged club papers to win the election: CID

One of the biggest allegations is that Jagan Mohan Rao submitted a forged document to contest the HCA elections. Even the investigators suspect that Rao and other top members of the HCA’s apex council were involved in misusing a staggering ₹2.32 crore from the association’s funds.

During their investigation, CID officials found that Jagan Mohan Rao used a fake cricket club membership to contest the 2023 Hyderabad Cricket Association elections. He claimed to be a member of the Srichakra Cricket Club, which was earlier known as the Gowlipura Cricket Club, but the documents were found to be forged. He was a member of that local club.

A CID official was quoted as saying by the Times of India, “Rao furnished a forged membership of Gowlipura Cricket Club (rechristened as Srichakra Cricket Club) to contest in the elections and won.”

Gowlipura club officials held in the HCA election scam

Meanwhile, the CID arrested Gowlipura Cricket Club president G. Kavita and her husband, Rajender Yadav, the club’s general secretary, for helping the HCA president commit election fraud. CID officials also claimed that Rao, along with Srinivas and Kante, misused association funds under the pretext of official work.

Rao was arrested from his Gachibowli home, Srinivas from Padma Rao Nagar, and Kante from Begumpet on Wednesday night. Later, Kavita and Rajender Yadav were also taken into custody. Family members were shown official arrest notices during the operation.

HCA President’s demand sparked SRH outrage in IPL 2025

Notably, the Hyderabad Cricket Association faced heavy criticism during the recent IPL 2025 for demanding extra complimentary passes. Things took a serious turn when Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) accused HCA of mistreating their team and even threatened to move out of the city.

The SRH and HCA had an agreement of 3,900 free passes per match, but the president allegedly demanded 20 more. The situation got worse ahead of the SRH’s IPL 2025 match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), when the VIP box for LSG owners was reportedly locked by the HCA president just hours before the match, and they made his act public.
