Manchester City striker Erling Haaland says Myles Lewis-Skelly and the Gunners were correct to mock him during the 5-1 defeat at the Emirates back in March.
The Norwegian had goaded Lewis-Skelly and manager Mikel Arteta during the previous meeting between the clubs earlier in the season. Asked about what happened, Haaland admitted that he had it coming:
“They won the game 5-1. So yeah, they got me. If he wanted to use that moment to mock me, that’s fair enough for him. Whatever he wants to do, he can do.”
It could be argued that Haaland didn’t stay true to his own advice of “stay humble”, which he gave to Arteta during the game at the Etihad last year, but the striker thinks it’s a philosophy to stick with:
“I think it’s an important phrase, which a lot of people should use, including myself. It’s one of the most important things, as individuals, to do.”
City v Arsenal fixtures will have more of an edge going forward
Due to the friendship between managers Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta, there was never really any antagonism between the two teams in past years, even when they were going toe-to-toe for the Premier League title.
However, Haaland‘s antics last season changed the atmosphere around these games, and you can guarantee that the two matches this campaign will have a bit of needle about them.
When will Haaland’s team take on the Gunners?
The Cityzens return to the Emirates on September 21st, and there will certainly be a strong desire to get revenge for that 5-1 defeat.
There is a considerable gap before the return fixture, with City hosting Arsenal in April. Whether the title will be on the line in that match, we shall have to wait and see.
