Target Is ‘Keen’ On Etihad Switch As Man City Leapfrog PL Rival To Become Favourites For £40M Transfer

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford is “keen” on returning to Manchester City, according to reports.

It is believed that Pep Guardiola’s side have been in contact with the Clarets about re-signing their former player and TBRFootball claim that the shot-stopper is open to moving back to the Etihad.

There is a £40m buyback clause that can be triggered but the Cityzens are said to be hopeful of signing Trafford for below that amount.

Whether that is possible may well depend on several factors, but it appears the Manchester side are now favourites to sign the keeper.

A rival Premier League club was in negotiations to buy Trafford

Newcastle have been looking to snap up the 22-year-old for the best part of 12 months. The Magpies had bid in the region of £15m rejected last summer but they re-entered talks with Burnley a few weeks ago.

Despite lengthy discussions, no agreement over the transfer fee was reached, mainly due to the fact that Burnley are looking to get £40m for Trafford.

It appears City are also not prepared to pay that much, but they have an ace up their sleeve

Man City can offer a goalkeeper in exchange

Stefan Ortega hinted at a potential departure from the Etihad last month. When asked about his future by reporters at the Club World Cup, the German gave a cryptic response:

“It’s quite early [in the summer] for that question, I can’t say anything about that, it’s too early.”

It is believed Burnley would be keen on Ortega as their replacement for Trafford, so there is a good chance that an offer below £40m would bee accepted if City’s no.2 is included. Of course, for that to work, you would need to get the approval of the player first.
