Manchester City are no longer interested in signing Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Writing in his column for GiveMeSport, Romano confirmed that the Cityzens have “stopped all conversations” with the player’s camp.
Gibbs-White and Wirtz were tipped as the two main targets to replace the departing Kevin De Bruyne.
However, after withdrawing from the battle for Wirtz (who is expected to join Liverpool), they have also done the same with Gibbs-White (who is now being linked with Chelsea).
Man City are focused on recruiting a different player
Rather than pursuing Gibbs-White, the club have devoted their efforts to bringing in Rayan Cherki from Lyon instead.
While there is an agreement on personal terms, City have yet to find a breakthrough on the transfer fee. Their first bid was said to be below €30m (£25m), and they are now lining up a second proposal.
With Cherki having just a year left on his contract, Pep Guardiola’s side will be reluctant to pay too much for the France international, but he will still be considerably cheaper than Gibbs-White, whose valuation is believed to be between £70m and £100m.
The transfer deadline is fast approaching
Clubs involved in the Club World Cup, such as City, are scrambling to bring in players ahead of the competition later this month. FIFA has opened up a special transfer window for teams to complete deals but it closes at 7 pm on Tuesday.
The transfers of both Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri are expected to be finalised in time, with the pair set to undergo medicals, but a move for Cherki is unlikely to be wrapped up anytime soon, based on how slowly talks are progressing.
Romano says that negotiations are on the “right path” and more conversations are scheduled to take place over the weekend.
