Ex-AC Milan and Chelsea star Ruud Gullit claims that Tijjani Reijnders’ departure for Manchester City will be “an incredible loss” for his former club.
Reijnders only signed a new contract with the Rossoneri a couple of months ago, and asked for his thoughts on the player’s move to the Etihad, Gullit suggested that Reijnders wants to play for a club who are ready to win trophies:
“I’m very happy with his path [to Milan]. 3/4 years ago, he played with my son, and when [Arne] Slot sent him to the second team [at AZ Alkmaar], Reijnders got very angry. Now he has had a very rapid rise. He is a strong player, who knows how to score goals.
“It will be an incredible loss for Milan when he leaves. He is someone who wants to win, he is not satisfied with staying in a club that doesn’t win.”
City are closing in on the signing of the Dutchman
Reports in Italy suggest that Pep Guardiola’s side are close to agreeing a fee with Milan for Reijnders. The deal could be worth up to €70m (£59m), including add-ons, with a base fee of €60m (£50m).
The 26-year-old is thought to be so keen on securing his switch to the Etihad that he has told Director of Football Hugo Viana to push as hard as possible to get the deal done.
Reijnders is not the only midfielder being pursued
It is believed that the Cityzens are hoping to buy a No.8 and No.10 this summer. The AC Milan midfielder is expected to fill the former role.
In regards to who the club want for the more advanced position, the two names currently under consideration are Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki.
Read our article on Cherki which explains why the Frenchman will not be available for a low price as some have suggested.
