Romano Says Man City Have Received ‘Approach’ From PL Rival For Player Guardiola Has Described As “Magnificent”

Tottenham have made an “approach” for Man City defender Manuel Akanji, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Thomas Frank’s side have been pursuing one of Akanji’s teammates, Savinho, for most of the summer, but it seems as if they are also keen on the Swiss international.

Akanji is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium before the transfer window closes, with manager Pep Guardiola looking to reduce the size of his squad.

The 30-year-old has been one of the club’s most consistent performers since his move from Borussia Dortmund three years ago.

However, Akanji was only an unused substitute for the season opener against Wolves, and he did not even make the bench for the 2-0 defeat to Spurs last Saturday.

It is a 3-team battle for the City defender

Galatasaray have reportedly agreed a fee of £15m for Akanji, but it appears as if the player does not want to move to the Turkish champions.

AC Milan have also entered talks to sign the centre-back. The Rossoneri are ready to match City’s asking price, although they are still in the process of agreeing personal terms. It means that Tottenham do still have a chance of winning the race for his signature.

Guardiola has praised Akanji on numerous occasions

While it looks like the defender will leave the Cityzens before Monday evening’s deadline, his talent is very much appreciated by his manager. Speaking back in October 2022, Guardiola said:

“There are players you have to explain to 10 times what you are thinking, what you want him to do. This guy, we did it in just one training session. Just tell him, and he got it.”

“The movement you have to do as a full-back, the high pressing, it was a little bit scary as he hadn’t proved he could do it before. But he did it perfectly. Defending the crosses, he didn’t miss once, absolutely perfect, and with the ball, he’s a magnificent player.”
