Former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand corrected himself when rating who he believes is the Premier League’s top No.9.
The TNT Sports pundit was speaking about Alexander Isak and his British record move from Newcastle to Liverpool when he suggested that the Swede was the country’s “best striker”, before changing his mind and opting for a Manchester City player instead:
“We’ve seen Isak muscle his way out of Newcastle. He gets the deal done, a massive transfer fee, Liverpool have had one of the best, arguably, transfer windows we’ve seen in the Premier League era.”
“They’ve gone and got the best striker, well, the second best striker after Haaland in the Premier League.”
Haaland’s goal record compared to Isak’s
Both forwards actually arrived in England in the same summer, so we can provide a like-for-like comparison between 2022 and 2025.
Over the last three years, Haaland has found the back of the net 88 times in 100 Premier League appearances, averaging a goal every 94.67 minutes.
Isak, meanwhile, has scored 54 in 86 league games, giving him an average of 1 goal every 121.4 minutes. It does back up Ferdinand’s assessment as to who is the better striker.
Man City will need Haaland’s goals this season
It hasn’t been a particularly great start to the campaign for Pep Guardiola‘s men. After a promising opening day win over Wolves, they have suffered back-to-back defeats to Tottenham and Brighton.
Haaland’s performances have not been to blame. He scored a brace at Molineux before getting his 3rd goal in as many matches at the Amex on Sunday afternoon.
Currently, the system around the Norwegian is not working as it should. Speaking after the loss to Brighton, Guardiola said that his team simply stopped playing in the second half. This new-look City still seems to be a work in progress.
