TalkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy has criticised Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly following his goal during the Gunners’ 5-1 win over Manchester City at the weekend.
The teenager copied one of Erling Haaland‘s celebrations, seemingly mocking the Norwegian, and Cundy believes such a taunt should only be made if you have the credentials to back it up:
“The Lewis-Skelly stuff… wind your neck in. Arsenal fans will love it and I get why they love it, ‘he’s one of us, he’s one of our own’. Fine. Haaland’s completed football…”
“You’re talking about a guy who has scored 250 career league goals and Lewis-Skelly is sitting there doing that? Wind your neck in, come on, let’s have it right.”
Haaland rose above it all
In addition to Lewis-Skelly, the forward was goaded by his teammate Gabriel throughout the 90 minutes, but the forward never took the bait.
Even commentator Gary Neville said Haaland was well within his rights to retaliate but he never did. The reason for that is probably down to the fact that he is comfortable with his achievements, and doesn’t feel the need to defend himself.
There is needle between City and Arsenal
It could be argued that Haaland started things with his comments after the 2-2 draw between the two sides back in September.
The 24-year-old told Gunners boss Mikel Arteta to “stay humble” which irked the Spaniard as well as Arsenal’s fanbase in general. He has been constantly reminded of his remarks since then.
Haaland is also thought to have had a run-in with Lewis-Skelly during that game which is likely to have led to the defender’s mock celebration.
It will be interesting to see what happens when the two teams next meet. Haaland will probably be more determined than ever to get one over City’s rivals.
