Manchester City target Sandro Tonali is set to remain at Newcastle this summer, according to reports.
The 24-year-old has been linked with a switch to the Etihad in recent months, with Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio having stated earlier this year that the player had been “watched” by Pep Guardiola’s side.
However, The Telegraph now claim that Tonali is “determined to stay” at St James’ Park as he wants to repay the club who stood by him during his ban from football.
The Italian international was sidelined for 10 months after being found guilty of betting on games.
Tonali would have been an expensive purchase
Newcastle signed the midfielder from AC Milan for £55m at the start of last season and he has been in good form recently
He has helped the Magpies win their first trophy in 70 years after beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. His team are also vying with City for Champions League qualification. They are currently sitting a point above Guardiola’s men in the Premier League table.
City have looked at several midfielders
In addition to Tonali, the Cityzens have been credited with an interest in AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders, Atalanta’s Ederson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and even Napoli’s Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa over the past few weeks. It is an area of the pitch that will need reinforcing during the summer window.
Kevin De Bruyne is set to leave the club on a free transfer when his contract expires. There are also doubts over the future of Ilkay Gundogan, who has struggled to replicate the form he showed in his first spell with the club, while Kalvin Phillips is expected to be offloaded when he returns from his loan at Ipswich Town.
