Manchester City are expected to activate the €16m (£13.8m) “buyout clause” in the contract of Velez Sarsfield winger Maher Carrizo, according to reports in Argentina.
Soydelmillo.com claims that the Cityzens plan to pay the release fee of the 19-year-old but he won’t make the move to the Etihad Stadium straight away.
With Pep Guardiola’s side not have having another foreign player spot available in the squad, it is believed Carrizo will be loaned out for the next 18 months.
The forward could potentially spend the next season and a half with River Plate, a club with which City have a strong relationship.
City have been keeping an eye on Carrizo
It was reported back in May that City scouts were in attendance when Velez Sarsfield played San Antonio Bulo Bulo in the Copa Libertadores.
Carrizo had a good game, scoring in the 3-0 win, and that performance likely strengthened City’s resolve to make a move for the youngster this summer.
In all competitions this campaign, the teenager has found the back of the net 7 times and registered 1 assist. His record in the Copa Libertadores is particularly impressive, having scored 4 in just 6 appearances.
Carrizo will hope to follow the path of other Man City players
Julian Alvarez started his career with River Plate before the Cityzens secured his signature for £14m in the 2022 January transfer window. He was loaned back for six months prior to making the switch to Manchester.
Claudio Echeverri was signed from the same team at the start of last year. The midfielder stayed in Argentina for twelve months before moving to City in January.
It will be a slightly different trajectory for Carrizo, who has played for Velez since making his senior debut, but he would likely benefit from the experience of joining River Plate.
In other news, it has been claimed that Manchester City were “ready to match” the £60m release clause in a Premier League player’s contract
