Real Madrid’s Rodrygo has been linked with a move to Man City on several occasions over the past few seasons.
The Brazilian did nothing to dampen the speculation when he praised Pep Guardiola’s side as the “best team in the world” last year.
At the time, Rodrygo did not appear to be close to leaving the Bernabeu but the arrival of Xabi Alonso as head coach this summer has changed things.
The Athletic claim that Alonso and the club’s board would “not stand in his way if a fair offer comes in” for the winger.
Rodrygo has yet to make up his mind on whether he will ask to leave, despite starting just one game at the Club World Cup, but it seems he will not be a regular starter if he stays.
Man City won’t have much competition from Premier League rivals
In addition to confirming Real’s stance, The Athletic have revealed that Arsenal are unlikely to firm up their interest in Rodrygo. The Gunners have prioritised a move for Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, so they would need to offload either Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard to sign another forward.
Despite selling Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich, Liverpool are also not expected to make a bid for the Brazilian, with the Reds currently focused on purchasing Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
Reports in the Spanish press had also mentioned Tottenham as a potential suitor, but they are not thought to be pursuing players of Rodrygo’s profile.
Any approach for Rodrygo may depend on Grealish’s departure
It should be pointed out that Guardiola is not short of options on the left wing (which is the Real forward’s preferred position).
In addition to Jeremy Doku and Omar Marmoush, Jack Grealish is still at the club. The England international would need to leave the Etihad before the Cityzens seriously consider a move for Rodrygo.
In other news, Man City get the chance to sign a former target for just £30m
