Manchester City have made a move to re-sign Cole Palmer from Chelsea, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
Writing on his Substack, Phillips said that Pep Guardiola’s side have already registered their interest ahead of the summer transfer window, with Liverpool also in the mix:
“I’m not saying we do sell him by the way, both Manchester City and Liverpool have been sniffing around Cole Palmer for the summer, with City making an enquiry recently.”
The Cityzens only sold Palmer to their London rivals for £42.5m less than two years ago so it would be a surprise if his return to the Etihad was on the cards.
Are City trying to correct one of their mistakes?
Considering what Palmer has gone on to do since leaving the Premier League champions, many pundits and fans have said that the club made a massive error in offloading him.
The England international may be going through a barren spell in front of goal at the moment but he has averaged a goal involvement every 2.3 matches in a Chelsea shirt.
Would Palmer be open to returning?
Speaking about his decision to move to Chelsea last month, the 22-year-old claimed that he was reluctant to make the switch initially. What pushed him to leave was the prospect of more first-team football:
“I was so adamant for ages that I wasn’t going. I’ve never moved out of Manchester. I really didn’t want to go. (But) you get a bit disheartened at City, why am I not getting a chance to play? You just know when you’re ready to play.”
For that reason, you would have to say that Palmer wouldn’t be against returning to City at some point in the future but it seems very unlikely that Chelsea would sanction his sale this summer.
