Man City are among several teams who “want” to sign Levante striker Karl Etta Eyong, according to reports in the Catalan media.
Barcelona have identified the Cameroon international as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
However, Mundo Deportivo claim they will face competition from the Cityzens, Manchester United, Arsenal and potentially Real Madrid.
Etta Eyong has had an impressive start to the campaign, having joined newly-promoted Levante from Villarreal in September.
The 22-year-old has scored 6 goals and contributed 3 assists in just 10 appearances so far, and if he continues his current form, he could be in contention for the Pichichi Trophy (La Liga’s top scorer) by May.
Etta Eyong does have a release clause
Mundo Deportivo report that the forward’s contract has two separate clauses – one for La Liga teams and another for clubs abroad.
If the likes of Barca or Real Madrid want to sign Etta Eyong, they will need to pay €30m (£26m). City and others outside Spain would need to spend €40m (£35m).
Do Man City need another striker?
It is up for debate whether a new No.9 would get much game time, considering manager Pep Guardiola already has Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush at his disposal.
However, it could be argued that Haaland could do with having a like-for-like backup, with Marmoush also capable of being deployed out wide.
While Haaland’s fitness has been very good recently, there is always a worry when he picks up a knock. There isn’t another clinical striker that Guardiola can call upon. In that context, Etta Eyong could be snapped up to become Haaland’s deputy. Whether he’d be happy with such a role, though, is another matter. He could potentially get more minutes elsewhere.
