Man City are one of several clubs scouting Feyenoord fullback Givairo Read, according to reports in the Dutch media.
The 19-year-old has caught the eye with his performances over the last 12 months, having broken into Feyenoord’s starting lineup at the start of last season, and newspaper De Telegraaf report that he is now attracting plenty of interest.
In addition to the Cityzens, both Arsenal and Bayern Munich are tracking Read, with the latter having even reportedly contacted his representatives.
The player himself says he is taking the rumours (about Bayern specifically) in his stride:
“It doesn’t distract me, you know. I’m comfortable at Feyenoord, and my development here is the only thing on my mind… Yeah, yeah, jokes are being made. Suddenly, they’re going to start speaking German to me and stuff. But that’s nice to see.”
What do fans need to know about Read?
The defender made his senior debut for FC Volendam in March 2023, coming on for the final 5 minutes of the 2-1 win over Fortuna Sittard.
Read then signed for Feyenoord on a free transfer just a few months later. He had to wait for first-team opportunities, but he became a regular starter for the Eredivisie side in October last year.
The Netherlands Under 21 international has gone on to make 47 appearances, scoring 4 goals and providing 11 assists.
Man City are on the lookout for a new right-back
Pep Guardiola has had problems on the right-hand side of defence for nearly a year. Kyle Walker’s departure has left a gaping hole in the position.
The Cityzens have been linked with several replacements, including Juventus’s Andrea Cambiaso and Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, but both deals were deemed too costly.
Read is less experienced than those two players, but he is a very promising teenager who could provide competition for the likes of Matheus Nunes and Rico Lewis.
