Manchester City have been named as one of “several European teams” that are keeping tabs on Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Madrid-based publication AS claims that both the Cityzens and Galatasaray are watching with interest as the German international continues to train away from the first team squad.
Ter Stegen is currently training alone, with it being suggested that he is suffering with back pain. However, the decision of head coach Hansi Flick to make new signing Joan Garcia his No.1 is believed to have caused tension.
With Barca also looking to balance the books, they are believed to be open to selling ter Stegen if they receive a good enough proposal.
Ter Stegen’s ability has been praised by a rival
Speaking about the Barca shot-stopper a couple of years ago, Real Madrid‘s first-choice Thibaut Courtois paid tribute to his abilities:
“Ter Stegen is an incredible goalkeeper. Sometimes there are bumps in your career, and you have bad luck that maybe they mark you an unfortunate goal sometimes. What happens is that now things are going well for him, and a goalkeeper with confidence grows even more.”
Are Man City in the market for a new keeper?
When Ederson spoke out during the Club World Cup to say he was staying at the Etihad Stadium, it put to bed rumours that the Cityzens were looking for a replacement.
It was widely believed that the Brazilian would move to Saudi Arabia but he made it clear in no uncertain terms that he would not be moving teams.
The waters were muddied somewhat earlier this week when it was claimed that Napoli had made an approach for Ederson. The Serie A champions must have had some encouragement to even enter discussions with City.
With that in mind, a move for ter Stegen cannot be completely ruled out before the end of the transfer window but nothing has been set in motion yet.
In other news, a defender has “successfully passed” a medical ahead of joining Man City
