Manchester City are weighing up whether to use Jack Grealish in their attempts to sign West Ham attacking midfielder Lucas Paqueta, according to journalist Jorge Nicola.
Speaking on his YouTube channel (quotes via Sport Witness), Nicola said that the Cityzens have been “pushing” Grealish towards the Hammers.
Pep Guardiola’s side have yet to find a buyer for the 29-year-old, who was not selected in the squad for the Club World Cup earlier this summer.
They have been asking clubs for between £40m and £45m but plenty of teams have been scared off by Grealish’s salary, which is reportedly £300,000 a week.
Man City have been pursuing Paqueta for a long time
The Manchester club have tried to sign the Brazilian on more than one occasion. They came incredibly close to securing his signature a couple of years ago, but the FA’s investigation into spot-fixing allegations led to the move falling through.
Now, Paqueta has been cleared of any wrongdoing, it appears as if they have revived their interest. West Ham are said to be holding out for a fee between £50m and £60m for the midfielder, but including Grealish in the deal would dramatically reduce the costs involved.
Grealish does have other suitors
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Tottenham have made enquiries for the England international over the past week, with Spurs keen on finding a replacement for James Maddison who has suffered a serious injury.
However, the most concrete interest in Grealish has come from Everton, who have held formal talks with City about a loan deal. There are serious question marks over whether the Toffees would be able to cover the player’s salary, so any move to Merseyside is deemed difficult.
For that reason, using Grealish as a makeweight in an offer for Paqueta might be a more attractive option.
