Manchester City have agreed to sell winger Farid Alfa-Ruprecht to Bayer Leverkusen, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Writing on his X account, Romano said his catchphrase “here we go!” and stated that the 19-year-old will make the switch to Germany for £5m.
The Cityzens do hold a 40% sell-on clause on Alfa-Ruprecht, but there is no mention of a buyback option.
Of course, fans won’t need reminding that other young wingers have left the Etihad in previous years and have gone on to have great success in the Bundesliga.
Will City live to regret selling the youngster?
Jadon Sancho and Jamie Gittens also came through City’s academy before making their names in Germany. Both coincidentally joined Borussia Dortmund and were sold back to Premier League clubs for substantial sums.
Sancho was offloaded to Manchester United for £73m in the summer of 2021, while Chelsea paid £52m for Gittens earlier his month.
The only difference this time with Alfa-Ruprecht is that the Cityzens have protected themselves somewhat by ensuring they will get a significant percentage of any future sale.
Alfa-Ruprecht is returning home
While Sancho and Gittens were young English players moving abroad, this deal will see a youngster moving back to his home country.
Alfa-Ruprecht actually came through the ranks at Hamburg before joining City on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. He has been capped by Germany at Under-17 and Under-18 level.
Although the forward hasn’t made his senior club debut yet, his form in the UEFA Youth League and Premier League 2 last campaign suggests he is ready to step up. It’s very likely that he will be given chances by Leverkusen boss Erik ten Hag next season.
In other news, it has been claimed that Manchester City were “ready to match” the £60m release clause in a Premier League player’s contract
