Manchester City will consider letting Nico Gonzalez “leave” the Etihad Stadium before the transfer window closes, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Spaniard only joined Pep Guardiola’s side less than six months ago, but speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed reports at the weekend that Gonzalez could be sold over the coming weeks:
“Nico Gonzalez could leave Manchester City this summer. He joined Manchester City on deadline day in February for €65m from Porto and I’m told there is a chance for Nico to leave Manchester City already this summer. He’s not probably had the impact they both
expected, Nico and Manchester City, so in case of [a] good proposal, there is a chance for Nico Gonzalez to leave Manchester City already in this summer transfer window.”
“It is still not something guaranteed, so it’s still not something 100% decided, also because it will depend on the proposal,s but Nico Gonzalez’s situation could be one to watch in the coming weeks, in case of good proposals, in case of good opportunities. Also because he doesn’t look to be so important in the rotations at Manchester City.”
Man City have too many midfielders
In hindsight, the decision to buy Gonzalez was a knee-jerk reaction to the serious injury sustained by Rodri in the first half of the season.
The 23-year-old was essentially brought in as short-term cover but Guardiola now has plenty of other options in that position.
In addition to Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders has been signed, while Mateo Kovacic is available to the manager too. When you also consider that Ilkay Gundogan, James McAtee, Nico O’Reilly and Bernardo Silva are part of the first team squad, there are simply more midfielders than needed.
What is the latest on Rodri’s injury?
The 29-year-old suffered a knock against Al-Hilal last week. He was forced to withdraw from the game early in the second half with Guardiola saying he had “complained about his situation.”
Not much more has been said about Rodri’s fitness since then but it is not uncommon for players to pick up muscular problems following lengthy injury layoffs.
