‘Dynamism and a bit chaotic’: Mikel Arteta describes Riccardo Calafiori’s playing style after 2-0 win vs West Ham

Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League table after a 2-0 victory over London counterparts West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The Gunners had a nervy moment in the first minute of the game, but barring this, they were in control and should have won by a bigger scoreline at home.

Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were the goal scorers for the Gunners, but Eberechi Eze squandered a golden scoring chance when the scoreline was 0-0.

Calafiori was also unlucky with his effort. The Italian ace unleashed a sublime right-footed shot from outside the box, which unfortunately hit the woodwork.

The left-back had an almost free role against the Hammers. He largely spent time in the opposition half and made himself available as a central playmaker at times.

The former Bologna man also made a couple of runs on the opposite flank.

When asked to describe Calafiori’s role after the derby win, Arteta said that he has a lot of dynamism and can be a bit chaotic, making him ‘very difficult’ to control for the opponent.

He told Arsenal.com: “A lot of dynamism, sometimes a bit chaotic but I think his dynamism and the spaces and the situations that he can create are very difficult to control for the opponent, especially against a team that is very well-organised.

“You have to disrupt their organisation in order to create chances and I think we’ve done that really well.”

The £31 million-rated star has had a superb start to his second campaign with the Gunners. He has been an undisputed starter in the Premier League at left-back ahead of Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The Italian had a tough debut season hampered by regular injuries, but has had a sublime turnaround. He has already registered one goal and two assists in the ongoing league campaign.

Lewis-Skelly had a brilliant breakout year with the Gunners last term, but the fantastic form of Calafiori in the early weeks has meant that he has been restricted to a substitute league role.

The strong competition for places at left-back has brought the best out of Calafiori. The onus is on him to replicate the same level of performances, or Lewis-Skelly could displace him.
