Agent Reveals Man City “Abandoned” Move To Sign £39M Walker Replacement

Manchester City “abandoned” a move to sign Juventus fullback Andrea Cambiaso during the January transfer window.

The Italian’s agent Giovanni Bia recently gave an interview to explain how the Cityzens decided to sign other players rather than advance talks to bring in Cambiaso:

“We were informed of the talks and gave our availability, waiting to find out how the negotiations would go. It didn’t go through because at that moment Manchester City had some serious problems and needed to intervene on the transfer market, buying [Abdukodir] Khusanov, [Vitor] Reis and Nico Gonzalez…”

“I don’t know [how big the fee would have been], in my view it was closer to €45 million (£39m) to €50 million (£43m), but we never got into it because the two clubs were still doing the talking. In the space of a few days, they had to invest that money in other positions and the talks were abandoned.”

A move for Cambiaso is unlikely to be revived

After City ended negotiations, the defender picked up several knocks and he was in and out of the starting lineup once Igor Tudor replaced Thiago Motta in the dugout.

It does appear the time has passed for Cambiaso to make the switch to England. He is not expected to change clubs this summer.

Man City have still not signed a right-back

It is believed that Cambiaso was targeted after Kyle Walker decided that he wanted to leave the Etihad. The 35-year-old joined AC Milan on loan in January before eventually moving to Burnley on a permanent basis earlier this summer.

Despite the decision to withdraw from talks for Cambiaso, a move for another right-back has not been explored. There is believed to be some interest in Newcastle’s Tino Livramento but the Magpies’ reluctance to sell has meant no official approach has been made for the England international. There have been links to Barcelona’s Jules Kounde too, but again, no bid has been lodged.
