15:00 Plymouth Argyle vs Barnsley
After losing their Championship status in the most heartbreaking of fashion last season, Plymouth are desperate to book an immediate second-tier return this time around. Getting a new era underway in Devon this summer following Tom Cleverley’s appointment, Saturday’s hosts will be hoping to come flying out of the traps here. Despite only finishing the 2024/25 campaign sat just three points adrift of Championship safety, the Pilgrims did gain plenty of plaudits for their gritty approach. Not suffering consecutive defeats after returning from March’s international break and collecting some notable scalps, Plymouth would have taken plenty of solace from their success on home soil. In fact, on a run that was highlighted by a 3-1 victory against play-off outfit Coventry, Cleverley’s new squad registered nine points from their final four Championship showdowns at Home Park.
Finishing the 2024/25 campaign sat 17 points adrift of the play-off places, Barnsley spent almost the entirety of last season sat in League One limbo. Despite signing off proceedings back on May 3rd with a dramatic 4-2 victory against Reading, the Tykes drastically failed to find any kind of stability. Only just pinching a top-half finish, Conor Hourihane’s side mustered just a pair of wins from any of their final 12 League One appearances – a rut that stemmed all the way back to March 1st. Likewise, mustering just a single away victory since the end of February, Saturday’s guests should also be concerned by their most recent trip to Devon. Hit with a 1-0 loss when they last travelled to Home Park for a League One showdown back in July 2022, Barnsley look set for what could be another tricky test here.

15:00 Doncaster Rovers vs Exeter City
Embarking on what was a sensational romp last season as they stormed their way to the League Two crown, Doncaster open the 2025/26 campaign regarded as a genuine underdog contender in the play-off hunt. Winning all of their final four straight appearances last season by an aggregate score of 10-2, Grant McCann’s men should find the mood in their camp at a continued high. Unbeaten in all of their seven summer friendlies, the former Peterborough boss will certainly be relishing a return to Yorkshire this weekend. In fact, continuing on from their pre-season preparations over the past few weeks, Doncaster are unbeaten in all of their previous 18 straight appearances – a run that stems all the way back to March 4th. Likewise, McCann’s side have not tasted a single defeat on home soil since the middle of February.
While Exeter might have eventually finished the 2024/25 campaign holding a commanding 10-point buffer over the drop zone, the Grecians failed to make any kind of impact. Signing off proceedings with a downbeat performance on May 3rd as they fell to a 3-0 drumming at the hands of Mansfield, Gary Caldwell’s side won just a trio of their final 11 appearances and they also collected consecutive wins on just a single occasion so far this calendar year. Losing their final two League One showdowns away from St. James’ Park by an aggregate score of 6-1, Saturday’s guests also failed to find any kind of fluidity on their travels. In fact, the Devon-based outfit registered just three wins from their last 13 matchups on the road – a run that stems all the way back to December 21st.
