Ruturaj Gaikwad signed a Yorkshire contract for the County Championship and the One-Day Cup

Gaikwad had signed the contract to represent Team Yorkshire in five County Championship matches as well as the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

He had travelled with the India A team for the England tour, but didn’t get any game time. The County Championship matches would have been his first stint in competitive cricket since early April 2025, when he was ruled out of the Indian Premier League 2025 due to an elbow injury and handed the captaincy to MS Dhoni.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was only able to participate in five matches in IPL 2025, where he scored 122 runs at an average of 24.40 and a strike rate of 150.61, with two 50-plus scores.

Despite MS Dhoni taking over the leadership midway through the season, Chennai Super Kings had a horrible campaign as they finished last in the IPL 2025 points table with four wins in 14 matches.

Ruturaj Gaikwad pulls out of county deal due to personal reasons

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club took to their official X handle to drop the news of Gaikwad’s unavailability for the rest of the season.

“The Yorkshire County Cricket Club can confirm that Ruturaj Gaikwad will no longer be joining the Club for the 2025 season due to personal reasons,” the club wrote on X.

Speaking of Ruturaj Gaikwad’s last-minute withdrawal due to a personal issue at home, the Yorkshire head coach Anthony McGrath said that it was a ‘disappointing’ development, but was hopeful of things being fine with Gaikwad.

“Unfortunately Gaikwad’s not coming now for personal reasons. We’re not going to have him for Scarborough or for the rest of the season. So that’s disappointing. I can’t tell you anything about the reasons why, but we hope that everything’s ok. We’ve literally just found out,” he said in an official statement issued by YCCC.

“We’re working behind the scenes on what we can do. But it’s only two or three days away, so I’m not sure what we can do at the moment.

“We’re working to try and get a possible replacement, but time pressure is the issue. I can’t give you anything more than that at the moment.”

Dom had a little bit of a niggle from the Roses game – Anthony McGrath

McGrath further talked about Jonny Bairstow and Dom Bess missing the T20 Blast game at Leicestershire. He said that Bess is suffering from a niggle, and Jonny Bairstow is unavailable as he wants to stay with his partner for the birth of their child.

“Dom had a little bit of a niggle from the Roses game, and we just took a precaution with him,” said McGrath.

“Jonny’s partner is due to give birth at any time, so we wish him and his family well. For Scarborough, we don’t know about that yet.”

Adam Lyth (calf) and George Hill (foot) have been doing some red-ball work this week, and we’re hoping they’re going to be ok.”
