Ranked! The 19 Premier League grounds to visit as an away supporter – Liverpool FC

Share

It’s almost time for the champions to begin their away days this season, but which of the Premier League grounds are the best – and worst – to visit as a travelling fan?

Liverpool’s away support is among the best in the country, but some trips are instantly more appealing than others when the fixture list drops in the summer.

Factoring in atmosphere, infrastructure, the surrounding areas – as well as the intangibles – here’s our guide to the best top-flight days out in the country for 2025/26!

19. West Ham – London Stadium

From a football supporting perspective, it’s hard not to have sympathy for West Ham fans given what was lost in 2016.

The Irons suffered a familiar modern-day fate in losing trading an iconic home for a soulless bowl, and while the 2012 Olympic venue looks impressive on the outside, there simply isn’t such a thing as a good view from the away end.

Location certainly isn’t a redeeming feature, either. You’ll need to make use of the capital’s tube system if you’ve any intention of sampling decent food or drink before the game.

18. Burnley – Turf Moor

The Clarets may have been unfairly hampered by my memory of torrential rain walking to and from the train station upon my last visit.

It certainly doesn’t ooze glamour and the outdated facilities don’t yield charm in the same way that others do. Turf Moor might be radio DJ Jordan North’s “happy place,” but it’s not mine.

17. Wolves – Molineux

Still stuck in the 20th century, offering no away-friendly watering holes, and an away end stretched down the long side stifling many attempts to garner an atmosphere.

One of the shorter Premier League journeys you can make as a Liverpool fan, but you are never made to feel particularly welcome.

16. Bournemouth – Vitality Stadium

Far too small to be a fit-for-purpose 21st-century Premier League venue, and the away end isn’t situated behind the goal. It was always going to be an uphill battle from there.

Narrowly escapes relegation due to its proximity to a beach.

15. Brentford – Gtech Community Stadium

LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 25, 2021: A general view of the Brentford Commnity Stadium before the FA Premier League match between Brentford FC and Liverpool FC. There is much to admire about Brentford in 2025, but the minuscule allocation and treacherous journey involved knocks the Gtech down the list unfortunately.

Five ticket checks to get into the away end also feels a tad excessive.

14. Man City – Etihad Stadium

Man City certainly haven’t suffered to West Ham’s extent for pinching a stadium initially designed for athletics.

That said, the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side patently owes far more to the talent on the pitch than its new wave of supporters in the stands.

13. Man United – Old Trafford

If you win it’s the best, if you lose it’s the worst, so it made sense for Old Trafford to fall somewhere in the middle.

One of the few remaining places where intimidation still transmits, and the more organic nature of the frostiness means Man United nudge their city rivals down a place.

The stadium finished higher than the team managed last season, anyway!

12. Newcastle – St. James’ Park

Like the football team, a trip to Tyneside would be pushing hard for a top four spot were it not for their insistence in putting visiting supporters virtually on the moon – the upper tier of the Leazes Stand.

The stadium sits at the heart of one of the country’s most vibrant cities and if you survive the climb up the stairs, you’ll get just as good a view of that as you will of the pitch.

Recent years have been kind to us there, mind. Divock Origi and Darwin Nunez have both famously sent us home from the North East with a spring in our step.

11. Chelsea – Stamford Bridge

Despite my disdain for Chelsea, I have a bit of a soft spot for Stamford Bridge and I can’t quite pinpoint why.

Naturally, it isn’t the friendliest trip you can make as a Liverpool supporter, but the stadium itself does possess palpable character, and the historic rivalry tied up in the fixture means a win here carries more weight than most.

10. Everton – Goodison Park

Given we are yet to pay the new home of our neighbours a visit, it feels appropriate to give one final nod to the Old Lady.

It was the centre of Everton’s universe for 133 years and, for better or worse, was as much of a symbol of everything the club represents to the bitter end (pun intended) as anything else.

The new place looks impressive on the face of it, but whether they’ll be able to replicate the ‘Goodison factor’ that has plagued us in recent Merseyside derbies remains to be seen.

It looks like they’ll have good acoustics for the boos, at least.

9. Nottingham Forest – The City Ground

Younger Liverpool fans would be forgiven for underestimating the longstanding rivalry with Nottingham Forest, but the home supporters at the City Ground will quickly remind you.

They aren’t the most pleasant bunch – certainly where we’re concerned – but it is a venue which oozes history and where the crowd can quickly get on top of the action.

8. Sunderland – Stadium Of Light

In February, the Reds will make their first trip to Sunderland in almost nine years, and it will be long overdue.

Despite spending almost a decade in the wilderness, the Mackems boast the ninth-biggest club stadium in England and it remains one of the most visually appealing walks up to a ground you are likely to find anywhere.

7. Leeds– Elland Road

Along with the atmosphere, part of Elland Road’s appeal is how little it has changed in recent times when compared with some of its Premier League counterparts.

Each visit feels like an occasion and the location lends itself to a pleasant day out with plenty to do, without having to traipse too far across the country.

6. Arsenal – The Emirates

LONDON, ENGLAND - Tuesday, July 14, 2020: A general view before the FA Premier League match between Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC at the Emirates Stadium. If you get chance to visit either of North London’s giants, you are in for a treat, but the Gunners have been marginally pipped by their fiercest rivals on this occasion.

Still, The Emirates is a sight to behold on matchday and the recent title race tussles have given this fixture a fresh edge.

5. Crystal Palace – Selhurst Park

Possibly the best, most consistent atmosphere you can experience in the modern day top flight, with a refreshing focus on supporting their own team rather than petty digs at our expense.

The letterbox view provides shades of the old Anfield Road End, but does ensure that the travelling Kop sounds as good as it does anywhere.

Not particularly straightforward to get to geographically, but a great day out nonetheless.

4. Tottenham – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

A rare instance of a modern stadium getting almost everything right, built of course around the foundations of the old White Hart Lane to retain a traditional twist.

It is undeniably one of the most impressive structures in world football and the home fans do sound great when they get going, not that they’ve had much to shout about in recent years.

3. Aston Villa – Villa Park

That Villa Park has landed itself a podium finish despite splitting the away section across two tiers speaks volumes about the rest of the experience.

A proper old school ground in the best possible sense, gettable in under two and a half hours from Anfield with a good run.

2. Brighton – Amex Stadium

BRIGHTON & HOVE, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 19, 2025: A general view of the AMEX Community Stadium ahead of the FA Women’s Super League match between Brighton & Hove Albion FC Women and Liverpool FC Women at the AMEX Community Stadium. It might be quite the slog to get to, but Brighton is comfortably one of the most picturesque parts of the country and that can sometimes help to offset adverse scorelines.

Making refreshments available on the concourse after the final whistle is an easy win that not many clubs take up, too.

The distance involved and sightseeing on offer means making a weekend of it is a no-brainer. Just don’t put us on Monday night again, Premier League!

1. Fulham – Craven Cottage

I said what I said.

Fulham’s neutral section remains an unusual quirk, but it often becomes an extension of the away end and makes tickets slightly more accessible than they otherwise would be.

Craven Cottage is unmistakable, steeped in history and the bars along the River Thames are well worth a visit if you have enough time before or after the game.
