Mikel Merino embraces ‘Spanish veteran’ role to help new Arsenal signings settle

Mikel Merino has spoken about his role as a senior figure in Arsenal’s Spanish contingent and his optimism going into the new season.

The midfielder joined from Real Sociedad in 2024 and made an immediate impact, scoring nine goals across all competitions in his first campaign.

He also memorably stepped into an unfamiliar striker role, netting twice against Leicester City and scoring in the Champions League win over Real Madrid.

Now, with Martin Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera and Kepa Arrizabalaga arriving this summer, Merino sees himself and David Raya as responsible for helping their compatriots adapt.

‘David and I, we are the veterans here – the Spanish veterans in the squad,’ Merino said.

‘So we try to help them as much as we can to understand who is who, names, and where to go. I know at the beginning it’s too much for everyone.’

Merino explained that he was grateful when Raya helped him settle last year and is now determined to offer the same support.

‘That’s what we’re trying to do and they are nice kids, so they will get settled very soon,’ he added.

‘They’re not only amazing signings in terms of football quality, but also really nice people to be around. That’s what this club is about.’

Merino praised the effort of the new arrivals to learn the language and adapt quickly, saying the whole club is focused on creating a positive environment.

Looking ahead to 2025/26, the midfielder avoided setting specific personal targets but stressed the importance of building on a strong pre-season.

‘We’ve had an amazing pre-season,’ he said.

‘We’ve been working hard, we’ve been preparing mentally as well, tactically, technically, everything’s on point. The mind is clear, the body is ready, so I can’t wait for the first game to come.’

Merino emphasised simplicity as his guiding principle on the pitch.

‘The main thing where I put my focus is in trying to perform at the best level and try to do the simple things the right way,’ he said.

‘Those simple things are going to make you go forward and make bigger things better, and then goals will come.’

Arsenal open their Premier League campaign away at Manchester United on Sunday in the headline clash of the opening weekend.

Merino will be expected to play a central role as the Gunners seek to start strongly in a season where they aim to turn near-misses into silverware.
