Man City have revived their interest in RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons, according to Sky Sport Switzerland reporter Sacha Tavolieri.
The journalist has a chequered record when it comes to accuracy but he claims that Pep Guardiola’s side have made fresh “contact” with Simons’ representative:
“Manchester City enters the race for Xavi Simons! With the likely departure of Savinho, the Citizens have reestablished contact with super agent Ali Barat in an attempt to lure Xavi away from Chelsea.”
“On #CFC side, talks are still. Nothing changes. Ongoing discussions and mutual interest to finalize a deal. Wait&See”
Chelsea are also in the mix
As Tavolieri mentions, City do have rivals for the Dutchman’s signature. Enzo Maresca’s team have been in talks with RB Leipzig for a couple of weeks.
However, despite discussions about a potential swap deal involving either Christopher Nkunku or Tyrique George, no agreement has been reached so far.
It has been suggested that Leipzig value Simons at around £60m despite the fact that he has less than two years remaining on his contract. They could hold out for that fee as they are no longer desperate to sell players after offloading Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United.
What is the latest on Savinho’s future?
Tavolieri claims that Simons is one of the options under consideration if the Brazilian ends up joining Tottenham. Talks over a €50m (43m) transfer have taken place.
However, despite Savinho reportedly being open to joining Spurs, no agreement is believed to be close.
There were reports that Rodrygo could also be targeted as an alternative to Simons if Savinho is sold, but for the time being, it doesn’t look like the forward will be leaving the Etihad.
In other news, Fabrizio Romano claims that a Man City midfielder is expected to join another Premier League club for a fee in excess of £20m
