Man City midfielder Nico O’Reilly has agreed to sign a new contract, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Writing on his X account, Romano said that the Cityzens have rejected approaches for the player from Germany and other English teams this summer:
“Manchester City and Nico O’Reilly have agreed on new deal for 20 year old talent.
“Bayer Leverkusen had two bids rejected, #CFC turned down approaches also from PL and decided to offer him a new contract. Verbal agreement done… and new shirt squad number.”
O’Reilly did explore his options
A couple of weeks ago, Romano mentioned that there was a chance that the 20-year-old could leave the Etihad Stadium as he wanted guarantees about first-team football.
Chelsea have been circling O’Reilly for the best part of six months, having made their first enquiry at the end of the January transfer window.
The news about Leverkusen’s interest is new, but it appears that manager Pep Guardiola has managed to persuade the youngster to stay.
Another Man City academy player is expected to leave
While O’Reilly seems poised to remain in Manchester, the future of James McAtee appears to lie away from the club.
Nottingham Forest have recently had a £25m bid rejected for the England Under-21 international. City are mindful about how Cole Palmer left and went on to thrive at Chelsea, so they are keen on getting a fee for McAtee that recognises his potential.
An offer in the region of £40m is likely to be accepted. It is not known whether Forest would be willing to match that asking price, or whether other teams (such as Everton or West Ham) are prepared to pay that much either. For now, the 22-year-old is staying put.
