‘I had suicidal thoughts’: Yuzvendra Chahal opens up on his divorce with Dhanashree Verma

Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has finally spoken about his divorce from Dhanashree Verma, offering an honest account of the emotional and mental struggles he faced during this difficult phase of his life. The couple, who were married for nearly five years, officially ended their marriage after the Bombay High Court granted their divorce on March 20.

Speaking on the Raj Shamani podcast, Chahal admitted that he battled anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts during the final months of his marriage. He revealed that the negativity on social media worsened his mental state and led him to step away from cricket briefly.

“I got anxiety attacks, I was in depression. I had suicidal thoughts. I watched so many things about myself on social media. I wanted a break from cricket. I started shivering due to anxiety and sweating despite the AC being on,” Chahal shared.

The spinner also disclosed that he requested a break from his state cricket team during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024–25 to focus on his mental well-being.

Chahal on the reason behind the split from Dhanashree Verma

Chahal also opened up about what led to the breakdown of his marriage. He explained that despite their efforts, he and Dhanashree were ultimately not compatible, and their busy professional lives made it difficult to spend quality time together.

“A relationship is like a compromise. If one gets angry, the other has to listen. Sometimes two people’s nature doesn’t match. I was playing for India, and she was also doing her thing. We couldn’t meet much for 1–2 years. Two ambitious people can live together, but everyone has their own lives and goals. As a partner, you must support that. When you’ve worked 18–20 years to reach a certain level, you can’t just leave it for a relationship,” added Chahal.
