Arsenal have now reached a full agreement with Sporting CP for the transfer of Sweden international striker Viktor Gyokeres, and the 27-year-old will take the No. 14 shirt at the North London club, according to The Athletic.
The number was made iconic by the Gunners’ record goalscorer Thierry Henry, and Gyokeres will hope to make a similar impact like the Frenchman at the Emirates Stadium club going forward.
Arsenal will part with an initial €63.5 million (£54.8m) for the Swede, and another €10m will come in add-ons.
Gyokeres is expected to undergo his Arsenal medical tomorrow (Saturday), and he has been given permission to travel.
Henry scored 228 goals and notched 101 assists in 377 games for the Gunners, with 175 of those goals coming in 258 Premier League appearances.
He won two Premier League titles with Arsenal, and manager Mikel Arteta has been looking for a striker capable of helping his club to league glory for the first time since 2004.
It remains to be seen whether Gyokeres is the answer, but he bagged 54 goals and 13 assists in 52 games last term after ending 2023-24 with 43 goals and 15 assists in 50 games, and he needs to prove himself upon his return to the Premier League after failing to make a league appearance for Brighton & Hove Albion.
Arsenal were forced to deploy Mikel Merino as a striker last term following injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, and the arrival of Gyokeres will come in handy next term.
They have emerged as runners-up in the Premier League title race in each of the last three seasons, and they are desperate to go one better in 2025-26, adding the likes of Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard to the squad, and Gyokeres will be next.
