Journalist Claims City Are “Ready” To Offer 5 Year Contract As £55M Bid For Walker Replacement Is Prepared

Manchester City are planning to offer in the region of €60m (£51m) to €65m (£55m) for Juventus fullback Andrea Cambiaso, according to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Sky Italia reporter claims that the Cityzens are “ready” to hand the Italian international a five-year deal, with an option for a further year, if he agrees to the switch to the Etihad.

Cambiaso was revealed as a transfer target by another journalist, Relevo‘s Matteo Moretto, at the start of this week and it seems that Pep Guardiola’s side are stepping up their pursuit of the defender.

Di Marzio has not provided much more detail on City’s approach apart from saying that they have “swooped down extremely decisively.” He has been linked to both Arsenal and Manchester United over the past 12 months but it appears neither team will enter the race for his signature.

Cambiaso is likely to be Walker’s replacement

While the 24-year-old has played most of his football at left-back this season under Juve manager Thiago Motta, he is equally comfortable on the right side due to the fact that he is both-footed.

If Di Marzio’s reporting is accurate, it seems that City have identified Cambiaso as Kyle Walker’s successor. Guardiola confirmed last week that the captain had asked to leave, with a move abroad expected to happen before the transfer window closes.

What should City fans expect from the player?

As already mentioned, Cambiaso is very versatile, having also been deployed as a holding midfield and a right winger in his career. That flexibility is vital in a system where he could be asked to play as an inverted fullback by Guardiola.

One negative is his lack of experience in European football. He has only made five Champions League appearances up until now, all of which have come this season. Ironically, the one game he missed was the last one against City. The defender was sidelined with an ankle injury but he is now back to full fitness.
