Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson shines for Brentford in 5-0 Carabao Cup win over Grimsby Town

Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson delivered a quality performance for Brentford during their 5-0 rout of Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup fourth round yesterday.

Grimsby had already beaten Manchester United and Sheffield Wednesday in the Cup competition, but the Bees were just too strong for them on Tuesday night at Blundell Park.

They dominated proceedings from the off. Nelson had a superb outing for the west Londoners.

The Gunners graduate grabbed the assist for the second goal and put the game beyond Grimsby’s sights with a fantastic goal of his own before the half-time interval.

Nelson was substituted in the 68th minute, but it was a memorable night for the winger. He made his first two goal contributions for Brentford since his temporary move.

Aside from his goal involvements, the 25-year-old completed 96 percent of his passes and won three out of four dribbles contested against the League Two outfit.

Nelson signed for the Bees on a season-long loan with a buy option, and Arsenal will be hoping that he can replicate such performances in the Premier League.

The Englishman has yet to make an appearance in the English top-flight this campaign. He was absent for multiple games after battling illness, but has been on the bench for the last two matches.

His performance last night should encourage manager Keith Andrews to hand him some minutes when the Bees face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The £14 million-rated star is unlikely to break into the starting line-up, but could get valuable playing time off the bench this weekend to prove his credentials.

Nelson’s current deal with Arsenal expires in June 2027. Hopefully, he can realise his potential at Brentford and provide a financial boost to the club next summer.
