Man City are weighing up a move for Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer, according to reports in the Spanish media.
Real Madrid have also been scouting the Brazilian international and Defensa Central claim he is high up their list of targets for next summer.
However, the La Liga giants are not willing to match Bremer’s €60m (£52m) release clause, leaving the way clear for other potential suitors to secure his signature.
City are reportedly “seriously evaluating” an approach for the 28-year-old, along with several other Premier League clubs.
Which teams could challenge City for Bremer?
Defensa Central claim that Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool are also considering whether to make bids for the defender.
Chelsea, in particular, are short of experienced centre-halves, while Liverpool may need a replacement for Ibrahima Konate if the Frenchman leaves Anfield on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Guardiola has plenty of centre-backs
If you look at City’s current squad, the centre of defence is not an area where manager Pep Guardiola is short of options.
Ruben Dias, John Stones, Josko Gvardiol, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nathan Ake are all part of the first team, while promising youngster Vitor Reis is currently out on loan.
For that reason, you can’t see Director of Football Hugo Viana prioritising the position as one that should be strengthened.
The right-back spot is a more pressing concern. Barcelona’s Deco recently confirmed that an enquiry from City for Jules Kounde was knocked back during the summer transfer window. There is also thought to be strong interest in Newcastle’s Tino Livramento.
If the Manchester club are to splash out £50m+ on a defender in the future, you would think the right-hand side of the back four would be where the money is invested.
