Romano Claims Club Are “Showing Strong Interest” In Departing Man City Star Amid Chelsea Claims

MLS side Chicago Fire are “showing strong interest” in Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Belgian international has confirmed that he will be leaving the Etihad when his contract expires at the end of the season and Romano says Chicago Fire are now one of the clubs in the frame to snap him up on a free transfer:

“MLS side Chicago Fire make approach to sign Kevin De Bruyne on a free transfer. De Bruyne will assess all options in the next days and weeks, but Chicago Fire are now showing strong interest with a specific project to attract KDB. Deal on.”

A move to the United States has been suggested as an option before, with San Diego FC having been linked, but this is the first time that Chicago Fire have been mentioned as a potential destination.

Could De Bruyne remain in England?

Pundit Joe Cole suggested earlier this week that the 33-year-old could be a “perfect” signing for his former club Chelsea.

De Bruyne hasn’t explicitly ruled out moving to another Premier League club when he leaves this summer, but such a decision would not be welcomed by City supporters.

City star could be tempted by the riches on offer in the Middle East

While a transfer across the pond looks like a genuine option for De Bruyne, he has also expressed an interest in joining the Saudi Pro League over the last year. Speaking back in July, he said:

“At my age, you have to be open to everything. You talk about unbelievable amounts in what may be the end of my career. Sometimes you have to think about that.”

As Romano says, though, De Bruyne has yet to make his choice on where he will be playing next season but he will have plenty of offers on the table.
